the googlemonster

Scenes Through the Eye of Google - The Lede - Breaking News - New York Times Blog

color me a luddite or a conspiracy theorist but I find that google is taking over the world. Now don't get me wrong I like some of their fancy technology. yay for gmail. On the other hand google earth and this form of google map with the street view...in so far as you can read peoples license plates kind of makes me feel like big brother is watching. :::insert horror film music here:::

Now I know that there already cameras everywhere especially in the UK (CCTV) but there is a difference in who is allowed to see what. Granted big brother could still be watching those but jo schmo stalker can't be zoomed in on my work.

Heh. If you are looking for me I'll be hiding under my desk :o)

I know this doesn't have anything to do with libraries other then the fact you can track them down and see what they building looks like without ever leaving the comforts of your computer chair. It just highlights how much technology has evolved and how quickly it is growing.

Mo. Man Burns Books as Act of Protest

My Way News - Mo. Man Burns Books as Act of Protest

T
his man is lashing out that people don't read books per say people are online people watch tv everything is "full." It is unfortunate. I do read "real" newspapers but I tend to get a lot of my news online because I can access newspapers that wouldn't necessarily be available to me in ye old Carlisle. Books on the other hand call me a luddite, which is odd since I spend part of my time digitizing books. In the perfect world, I would sit curled up in a comfy chair with a book (mmm new book smell) and the thought of sitting at a computer to read an entire book is not really appealing to me. I think my contacts would dry out. On the other hand, as a historian I relish in it because I can access books, pamphlets, laws (aka great resource tools) that in the past I never would have been able to get my hands on. If it is digitized it is hopefully searchable also showing researchers new records that past researchers have missed because they just didn't know they were there. I still don't want to read a whole book online but if it means certain texts more researchers, students, teachers can access I am for that. At the end of the day...I am still going to need to build a library addition on to my house.

Modern Technology

This had nothing to do with libraries but as more and more things in our daily life become computerized new complications can arise.

a new article

I am currently working on a project that deals with digitization and making things available to social studies teachers. This is an article I came across that I thought some of you might find interesting.

ARGH

My work computer is running extra slow today. Whelp that happens sometimes I suppose.

It has been a long day...week....I know I have a long weekend but I think i need like a week for my poor brain to just not function.

If you haven't figured it out I am not having the best week known to man. I am working at temporary job and my employment is kind of up in the air right now so I am trying to figure out what I am going to do if all of my plans fail? I am typically very optimistic but when it comes to the possibility of not having job color me nervous.

sigh.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Scorsese to rescue lost film gems

BBC NEWS Entertainment Scorsese to rescue lost film gems

I have a friend who is in England studying to be a film archivist. I saw this and thought of him. During my work on my applied history masters I took an intro to archives class...I also had an internship in a college archives.

Film archiving whether they are "stills" or "motion pictures" can be complex but it is important to preserve. As we become an increasingly visual culture the important of film preservation becomes more important.

a work in progress

First off - title of "never ending journey..." refering to my life long education which my entire family finds hilarious. Well my boyfriend finds the title hilarious. He keeps singing "never ending journey..." to the tune of never ending story. He feels that we should film footage of my collie flying through the air to go along with his singing.

ANYWAY.

I've finally gotten my textbook for 2600 and have the first two chapters read. I've downloaded (I think) all of the extensions we need for firefox. I don't know how to use them but I have them downloaded and I am working my way through Kuhn. I have always liked science but I don't know if it's my brain being rusty (which is possible) or the book but we aren't meeting at the same level.

Reading some of the comments on the discussion board, I feel like I am about 8 weeks behind some of my classmates. Like it's have way through the semester and I am just starting class. It is causing some minor stress. heh. I continue to tell myself that once I get in the swing of things that I won't feel so behind. We shall see how that works out for me.

I came across this website http://www.educause.edu/apps/er/erm06/erm0621.asp?bhcp=1 with an article, "A New Wave of Innovation for Teaching and Learning?", written by Bryan Alexander who is the "Director for Research at the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE). "

The article works to explain web 2.0. I know this is a topic that we will be working with this semester. The article also discusses del.icio.us.

A part that I found interesting is comparing the web to books but all of these new forms of social type networking like blogs, podcasts, wikis, etc. He likened the "microcontent" to posts and a streaming conversation. He gets into using this type of content in education. Another topic he spends some time with is copyright. People are posting all of this information to the web in an open manner that people (I imagine especially younger students) to break copyright laws.

I would have liked to see more on using web 2.0 in different levels of education.

I am not sure if this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing but I figured I would give it a go and see how it works. If anyone has any feedback let me know if you can lead me in the right direction or feedback in general!

off to a new start

I am off to a new start in a new field. I don't know exactly how that is going to go. I haven't been out of school for that long (although to me it seems like years as I am a perpetual student) I am moving away from history which has been my focus for the past 6+ years of my life.

I am excited and a little scared at the same time. Leaving your comfort zone is never easy.
